deeper understanding of Modernism

practice of in-depth critical reading of narrative texts

familiarsation with specific theoretical approaches to the modernist short story

With the onset of the modern period we see dramatic changes in the art of narration, manifest particularly in the short story. This seminar will explore these changes in detail, which means that we will undertake careful textual analyses to register formal and thematic specificities of modernist writing and relate them to a new way of thinking about and being in the world emergent at the beginning to the twentieth century. Authors you will encounter are Virginia Woolf, James Joyce, Katherine Mansfield, Elizabeth Bowen, Rudyard Kipling, Somerset Maugham, H.G. Wells, D.H. Lawrence, Jean Rhys et al.
