Participants will become familiar with methods of film analysis and film theory and learn to apply these methods to Russian cinema.

During the course we will try to grasp cinema in its different dimensions and functions, which range from visual form and narrative structure to character presentation, from cinema’s social and political functions to entertainment. We will, in a first step, study methods of film analysis as well as film and media theory. In a second step we will apply these methods to Russian films - to contemporary Russian cinema as well as to selected Soviet films.

Lectures, short presentations and discussions of selected films by the participants

Regular and active attendance; short presentations; written test; film review on a contemporary Russian film
