This lecture focuses on the history and society of Canada from the 17th century to the Dominion founded in 1867 and resulting in independent Canada - from World War I up to the present. Main topics: How did the exploration and development of the vast territory come along? What effects had the great waves of immigration on the colonization of the West in the second half of the 19th century? What were the consequences of European colonization on the life of the indigenous people of the country (First Nation, Inuit)? What was Canada's road to independence? What role did Canada play in the two World Wars? How did the modern industrial state and the multi-ethnic society emerge in the latter half of the 20th century? What is the basis of a Canadian identity? Which were the conflicts and disputes with the U.S.? What distinguishes Canada from its neighbour "south of the border"?
Oral presentation and discussion.
Course with continuous performance assessment: attendance at all sessions, active participation in discussions, comments, written paper.
