Broadening and deepening of general knowledge by dealing with exemplary topics, i.e. societies and languages of the Middle East and the Mediterranean as well as their interactions.

The course is conceived for beginners in Arabic preferably with a background knowledge in another Semitic language. The object is the Classical Arabic in its written form. Learning objective is a solid knowledge of the grammatical structure of the language that qualifies for a dealing with primary texts from the classical Arabic literature.

The grammatical structure from a Semitist perspective is central. The instruction is less conversation oriented but aims at hard philological knowledge. A solid basis of important vocabulary paves the way for any further engagement in the language.

Vocabulary test (written 10 min.) at the middle of the semester; exam (written 20 min.) at the end of the semester.
