On completion of this module students will be familiar with different methods of and approaches to literary text analysis and will be able to contextualise them and assess their applicability. The module enables students to use and reflect on these methods in their own analyses of literary texts from different genres (narrative and poetry), periods and cultures.

The lecture series provides an overview of a range of methods of and approaches to literary text ana­­lysis, which will be contextualised within their respective schools of thought. The lecture part of the module will focus especially on the charac­teris­tics of different narrative and poetic (sub-)genres and introduce tools for analysis, which will subse­quent­ly be applied to sample texts and further explored in practical exercises.
