Economic and Social History: From guild restraint to freedom of trade

Mediation resp. consolidation of historical knowledge about handicraft and craft guilds; Insight and awareness of “traditional” economical methods and the linked ways of thinking and virtues.

Starting with the question of how the guild system first came into being and how it was organized, its character, position and meaning in a changing society and environment will be analyzed. With help of various documents, the guild’s constitution and the reality of craftsmanship will be compared, through which the economical, political and social function of the guild will be shown as well as the reasons for its congealment, for the end of the “old craftsmanship”.

Topic-orientated course including lectures, discussions, independent work, presentations and practical exercises.

Active participation, journal, homework, statement, presentation and written assignment.
