Special Topics in Basic Research A/B: Migration

Students will possess in-depth knowledge about theoretical models, research methods, and empirical results of current migration studies. On the basis of their knowledge of psychological basic research they will be able to comment competently on everyday questions of migration and to argument by the theories and empirical results of psychological science. They will be able to judge, plan, and evaluate projects aiming at supporting immigrants psychologically, psychotherapeutically, and psycho-socially. Students will be familiar with the importance of cultural differences in social and clinical psychology; they will be in command of the necessary theoretical background knowledge and will also be able to refer to current empirical studies. They will know how to plan and carry out own empirical studies in the field of migration in a methodically competent way.

5. Examples of empirical results on migration to Austria

5.1 Psychological consequences of trauma: culture specific differences in asylum seekers from Afghanistan, Chechnya, and West Africa –"western" diagnostic systems do not suffice

5.2 Self-help groups: The positive effects of social support by compatriots on traumatized Chechen asylum seekers

5.3 Special problems in female Turkish working migrants: The limits of self-help

5.4 Vocational rehabilitaion of refugees in Austria

5.5 Psychotherapy with traumatized asylum seekers and refugees

B. Seminar (Appointments 4-7):

On the basis of current scientific literature, in small working groups, students will develop presentations on specific topics of basc research on migration, freely chosen by themselves. They will present and discuss the results of their literature search in the seminar.
