The students will have improved their awareness of good scientific practice (and in this regard will have gotten in contact with popular fallacies occuring with quantitative research). They will be able to judge central aspects of publications with regard to current developments in methodologies better. They will also be better prepared for own research activities due to their extended methods and statistics knowledge.

Contents of the seminar will be the examination of methods and test procedures, which complement and/or deepen the knowledge from foundational methods and statistics lectures. Part of that, for instance, will be the reflection of the practice of hypothesis (significance) testing, interpretation and use of effect sizes, the consideration of methods for the examination of complex models (concerning moderator, mediator, suppressor effects), procedures for the examination of models with latent variables (confirmatory factor analysis, structural equation modeling) and the contemplation of current reports about „timeless“ general problems, that arise with empirical research utilising quantitative methods (e.g. controlling response bias using questionnaires).

The seminar will be held in a mixture that consists of teacher-centered teaching that transports knowledge, and active participation of students in the teaching and learning process. Discussions of the contents (e.g. the procedures presented , publications or opinions of researchers) are central part of the seminar. The seminar instructor appreciates a positive atmosphere and an enjoyable presentation as good basic conditions of learning success and will try to foster them as far as the topics of the seminar allow it. Students are invited to participate in this effort.

The seminar exam will – due to the character of the seminar as a course with continuous assessment – be based on regular active participation of the students. Part of that is the participation in discussions providing own reflections, and on the other hand, a meaningful single or group effort (task, performance) which will cover an examination with certain topics, the acquisition or mediation of knowledge to others. What is considered to be meaningful is subject to discussion with the seminar instructor. He considers the academic benefit of the students as meaningful. He does not consider a seminar to be meaningful, if students are to reduce the instructor’s work load by being asked to give presentations weekly without any embedment into a coherent “big picture”.

Literature will be stated in the seminar. Own literature suggestions to relevant topics from the students are welcome as well and are subject to discussion with the seminar instructor.
