Translation of simple to intermediate-level texts, for example excerpts from the New Testament, from Greek into German.

This two-semester course meets 4 hours per week and will provide students with the fundamental linguistic tools necessary to translate simple to intermediate-level texts from Greek into German. In addition to providing a fundamental understanding of vocabulary and grammar, the course will also furnish participants with an understanding of the important historical, literary and cultural background surrounding many of the texts. While many of the texts we will work with come from the New Testament, several historical, literary and philosophical pieces will be included as well. In the summer semester we will focus more on the New Testament whereby the understanding of important vocabulary and grammatical concepts will be expanded and solidified.

Lecture and exercises.

The examination for the course will have both a written and speaking component — the use of a dictionary will be permitted in both. The written component of the exam will entail the translation of a Greek text (not one previously discussed in class) from the New Testament (roughly 2 hours, 120 words). The oral component will also entail translation of a short text, followed by a few questions regarding the piece (15 minutes).
