winter semester 2015/2016 | Last update: 11.09.2018 | Place course on memo listStudents will be able to grasp and explain theories of and analyses regarding the emergence and transformation of social institutions – especially politics, markets, and civil society. They will be able to analyze the workings of and reciprocal relations between these institutions in society. Students will be familiar with key debates, concepts, and methodological approaches in the social sciences, regarding the analysis of markets, state, and social institutions and organizations.
The theme of this course are the theories and analyses of the formation and of modern social institutions – especially as far as institutions and organizations in the government, economy, and society are concerned. The emphasis will be placed on their respective workings and reciprocal relations in modern societies, via classical as well as contemporary sources. The objective is to gain an overview over key traditions in sociological and critical theories of state, market, and society, on the basis of which central debates in the social sciences will be examined, expanded upon, and deepened, in the context of current developments (globalization, neoliberalism, changes in governance, economic crises).
