Students acquire knowledge and systematic insight into the functioning of a manufacturing system and the underlying principles of supply chain management.

They will comprehend the basic laws and state-of-the-art techniques for planning and control of material flows.

After this seminar students should be able to understand basic factory dynamics and how variability influences the performance (in terms of inventory, flow time, etc.) of manufacturing systems.

The seminar is used to gain a systematic insight into the behaviour of manufacturing systems. Therefore, guided self-study and presentations are coupled with working samples to the corresponding topics. A review of traditional operations management techniques is given, including inventory control and material requirements planning (MRP). Thereafter, the dynamic behaviour of manufacturing systems and the basic relationships between the performance measures is given. Continuing with working up the subtle influences of variability, the seminar will end with an overview of supply chain management.
