Sound and broad knowledge of applied linguistics; competence in applying and reflecting methods; critical examination of special problems in this field.

Is it allowed to name your child "Pumuckl"? What can linguistics do to help patients reorganizing their language abilites after a stroke? Why are there so many illiterate people in a nation with a compulsory school attendance of nine years and what can be done about it? How does a linguist establish a profile of a culprit in a criminal investigation?

Applied Linguistics deals with questions like these and seeks to find practical applications for linguistic knowledge. It describes and explains societal problems that have to do with language and develops actual solutions. Therefore, it needs to consider two kinds of multidisciplinarity: On the one hand, Applied Linguistics is composed of several branches (e.g. coaching, didactics of multilingualism, clinical linguistics). On the other hand, it tightly cooperates with other sciences (e.g. computer science, economics, medical science).

In this lecture, we take a closer look at selected fields of Applied Linguistics. Theoretical backgrounds as well as methods and examples of application will be discussed. The emphasis will be on professional prospects for linguists.

Some topics:

  • Corporate communications
  • Research on learning and teaching language
