• To grant an overview/insight of how anglophone poetry developed over time, with a special focus on love poetry
• To introduce and to practise forms of analysing poetry
• To further consolidate the students’ knowledge of literary history in English

Isn’t all poetry love poetry eventually? Of course not, even though a lot of poems revolve around love in one form or another. However, the preferred mode of expression is not only determined by a poet’s personal preferences but is also subjected to the conventions of the time or the stylistic framework, to mention only two other factors. The poems discussed will also bear witness to the historical and literary developments, often in their intentional transgression of formal or content requirements.
