609050 British and/or Postcolonial Literature: Much Ado About Everything: Shakespearean Comedy
winter semester 2015/2016 | Last update: 27.06.2017 | Place course on memo list- To create a basis (theories, methodologies) for an in-depth analysis and interpretation of literary and other cultural texts
- To support students in applying these techniques to selected texts
- To encourage students to think critically
- To analyse existing literary and social discourses
William Shakespeare’s comedies are in part enchantingly comic, in part gloomily oppressive and in part plain romantic fairy tales – often all in one text. Many of them, though, would by no means fit modern conceptions of comic writing. By drawing heavily on various source texts the playwright succeeded in creating such an impressive oeuvre in this genre alone that it will be impossible to cover them all in our course. What we will attempt to achieve, however, is a detailed analysis of the various types of comedies (including the problem plays), also with regard to their sources and origins as well as their impact. A drama workshop should help us explore additional, more practical perspectives.
