Introduction to British and Anglophone Cultures

To achieve (1) a solid basis in theories of and approaches to Cultural Studies

and (2) to acquire an overview of and critical insights into British culture

 

What is 'culture'?

Evolution of Cultural Studies

Representation: Critical Discourse Analysis, deconstruction techniques

Media: advertisements, film analysis

Nation, ethnicity, race: 'Britishness', 'Englishness', etc.

History and Historiography, Cultural heritage

Space, place and Postcolonialism

Gender Studies

Ideology, Hegemony, Sub-cultures

Background reading, with tasks and activities

In-session discussions

Short input talks

Homework assignments and mini-projects

Regular written assignments (dossier) with improved versions (final portfolio)

Oral contributions in sessions

Final written test or End-of-term interview (latter based on final portfolio)
