The aim of this course is to introduce basic conventions of good writing techniques.  It is a pre-essay writing course in which students will learn to compose both well-structured and varied sentences as well as coherent paragraphs.  We will analyze texts for structural elements such as unity, coherence, and cohesion.  Exercise types will include summary writing and elementary paragraph production.

The following topics will be covered in this course:

  • Sentence Elements and Sentence Structure
  • Paragraphing (unity, coherence, cohesion)
  • Relative Clauses
  • Punctuation (commas, colons, semi-colons, etc.)
  • Subordination and Coordination
  • Summarizing

Commentary of student writing in class.

Final, written exam.
