winter semester 2015/2016 | Last update: 31.08.2015 | Place course on memo listThis module is designed to enable students to further develop their speaking and writing skills with the aim of achieving level C1 in accordance with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). This involves being able to produce a clear, well-structured and detailed text on complex subjects as well as to express ideas fluently and spontaneously and to use language flexibly and effectively for social, academic and professional purposes.
Classroom activities and homework assignments will include vocabulary work, guided and free speaking activities (short presentations, dialogues, discussions), guided and free writing activities, as well as exercises aimed at improving students' idiomatic fluency and the cohesion and coherence of their texts.
Classroom activities will be supplemented by intense guided self-study. Your learning process will be supported by ongoing feedback provided by both your peers and your course tutor.
Continuous assessment (three written and three oral assignments; class participation).
IMPORTANT INFORMATION: Please purchase a good monolingual English dictionary before the start of term, e.g. the Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English for Advanced Learners, the Macmillan English Dictionary for Advanced Learners, the Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary or the Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary. A collocations dictionary such as the Oxford Collocations Dicationary for Learners of English or the Macmillan Collocations Dictionary for Learners of English is also highly recommended. (You will need both for your German<>English translation classes as well as for your future career as a translator.)
Course materials will be available via OLAT. Further materials and bibliographical references will be provided in class.
The following book is recommended for vocabulary work: M. McCarthy / F. O'Dell, English Vocabulary in Use. Advanced, Stuttgart, Klett 2014 (ISBN 978-3125401488).
Participants must have successfully completed all three parts of the module English I.
Please bring a copy of your transcript of records with you to the first session.
This module can only be taken in combination with 613127 (Reading and listening II) and 613128 (Grammar II), the other two modules of a six-hour course.
