Expanded knowledge and independent application of art-historical methods on examples referred to in the lecture

The monuments of Venice and Sicily are among the most important contributions to mosaic art from the 11th to the 14th century. The Byzantine high medieval technique of “painting for eternity”, as mosaic art has repeatedly been praised, manifests itself in San Marco in Venice, Santa Maria Assunta in Torcello or the Norman churches Capella Palatina and Monreale Cathedral, which are principal evidence of an art production exported from Constantinople and carried on by local workshops. The course also serves as an ideal preparation for the excursion to Sicily’s mosaic monuments in the summer semester of 2016.
