Expanded knowledge and independent application of art-historical methods on examples referred to in the lecture

Carolingian as well as Ottonian illuminated manuscripts can be regarded as the most important examples of the development of painting during these two epochs. This cannot merely be attributed to the fact that they present the most complete material of their time, but it also reflects the particularly high status illuminated editions of texts had at that time. They are associated with terms such as “innovatio imperii” or “Carolingian Renaissance”, which can be seen as the central positions of the historical and art-historical development. The Court School and the Palace School of Charlemagne, the schools of Reims and Tours, with works such as the Vienna Coronation Gospels, the Lorsch Gospels or the Utrecht Psalter, to name but a few, are as prominent as the highlights of Ottonian art production in Cologne and on Reichenau Island, which impress with cimelia such as the Hitda Codex, the Bamberg Apocalypse or the Pericopes of Henry II.
