The lecture deals with the development of European painting during the transition from the High to the Late Middle Ages. Byzantine as well as western medieval positions will be examined. The objects include murals, book illuminations, panel paintings as well as pieces of mosaic art. The similarities, but also the differences that occur between countries and cultures and the changes that mark the different developments, present interesting challenges to art historical analysis. Phenomena such as the Palaeologan Renaissance, the Zackenstil (jagged style) and the transition from the Romanesque to the Gothic style or the emergence of the Proto-Renaissance in works of Italian Due- and Trecento painting are keywords that indicate the high points of the complex developments. The course also serves as a preparation for the excursion to Sicily’s mosaic monuments in the summer semester of 2016.
