Developing a basic understanding and specific advanced knowledge of the lecture’s topic

The year 2014 marked the quatercentenary of the death of the Cretan painter, who achieved fame in Italy and Spain. For this reason, many exhibitions were held and his paintings, altarpieces and architectures were examined, X-rayed and restored. The lecture gives an overview of the old and the new insights. The intercultural dimension of his work from Byzantine art to the Italian late Renaissance and local phenomena in Spain will be a thread running through the lecture. Formal peculiarities, for instance regarding light, proportions, colour, and the often fierce debates concerning the artistic frames of reference – for instance in the Mannerism debate – will also be a main issue. Special chapters dealing with iconographical, historico-cultural and theoretical aspects will complete the biographical outline.
