640006 Society and Culture: Greece, Rome - Male and female saviours. A survey of Greek and Roman mystery cults
winter semester 2015/2016 | Last update: 25.01.2016 | Place course on memo listBasic facts of mystery cults in antiquity and of careful review of sources
The lecture deals with the phenomenon of Mystery Religions. In the center of such soteriologies were not only male deities like Mithras, Dionysos, Herakles and others, but also female deities like Demeter and Isis. While secrecy was a very important aspect in the ideas of salvation, we nevertheless could find a lot of available sources: prayers, votive inscriptions, Christian apologies and archaeological testimonies (temples, culture areas, statues of gods, cult objects, …) and many more.
Lecture and presentation of facts, results of research and scholarly debates, discussion and collaborative critical analyses of sources.
Active participation, readings, regular and active participation in discussions, final written exam
Literature provided with annotations is announced during the course
