This course aims at the investigation of “hunger” and “starvation” in literature, songs and painting from classical antiquity to the 20th century. Hunger in the very literally sense of starvation and famine will be considered as well as “hunger” in the metaphorical sense of spiritual longing and desire. In addition, different philosophical and psychoanalytic analyses will be taken into account.

This course analyses the representation of “hunger” and “starvation” in literature, songs and painting from classical antiquity to the 20th century (Sophokles, Ovid, Dante, Goethe, Goya, Kafka, Blandine Ebinger, Sinéad O’Connor for instance). Hunger in the very literally sense of starvation and famine will be considered as well as “hunger” in the metaphorical sense of spiritual longing and desire. In addition, different philosophical and psychoanalytic analyses regarding human drives, and conditions of existence, will be taken into account.

Presentations by the lecturer; close-readings; discussions; short key note speeches by the students, short papers.

To accomplish the course objective the students prepare keynote speeches during the semester, deliver a short paper (max. 5 pages) and participate actively in the discussions.
