Improving skills in handling and integrating of primary and secondary sources of the expeditons of James Cook in the context of enlightment. Improved paper writing skills.

James Cook (1728-1779) travelled three times around the world - from 1768 to 1771, from 1772 to 1775 and from 1776 to 1779/80. On his third voyage he was killed by indigenous in Hawaii. All three voyages were scientifcally motivated. Cook was accompanied by prominent scientist. The young German Georg Forster created a literary monument with his famous travel descripiton of the second journey. This seminar will deal with the different aspects of the expeditions of James Cook: geography, cartography, oceanography, astronomy, ethnology, anthropology, zoology, botany, paintings, logistics, life at sea, shore leaves and the reception of the expeditions. 

Preparatory phase, brief presentations incl. discussion, group work incl. reading of (source) texts.

Introduction into the historical context; active participation in discussions; papers presented by the participants; essay
