The students have at their disposal a deepened knowledge about a special period of the Habsburg Monarchy in which – due to the domestic political situation and the foreign affairs – a reformation/new organization was necessary. They know the taken measures and possible omissions and can discuss them on a scientific basis;

the students can ask a clearly formulated and well defined research question; they can independently analyze this question and present the result of their research in a scientific manner; they can refute critical remarks with good arguments or they can constructively use those remarks and finally write a scientific essay.

In the first part of the seminar essays are discussed which deal with the problems of this decade - constitutions, "Ausgleich", basic laws (Staatsgrundgesetze), "Länderherrlichkeit", national movements, the "social question", questions of women´s rights; corresponding to these items will the contemporary debates in parliament (Reichsrat) and newspaper articles be analyzed.

The students are expected to be present regularly and to take an active part in the course; they have to do smaller tasks alone or in groups; oral presentation of their own topic including a handout; paper on their topic (at least 25 pp.) - on seminar level.
