Throughout history and to this day, Vienna, Austria remains unsurpassed as a center of classical music. Whether or not you listen much to classical music, you will recognize the soundbites of most of the Austrian music we’ll discuss in this course. This is an Austrian-focused music appreciation course in which we’ll go beyond the soundbites to discuss past and present contexts for famous and beloved melodies and musical works of Mozart (featured in the program’s Opening Ceremonies), Beethoven (Für Elise, Moonlight Sonata, Fifth Symphony, “Ode to Joy”), Schubert (tragic 19th-c songwriter), Johann Strauss, Jr. (composer of The Blue Danube Waltz), and Richard Strauss (Bavarian composer of the most famous soundbite of all). Using movies, video clips, my keyboard demos, the Internet, and, of course, the songs of The Sound of Music, we will explore famous Austrian music and its meanings in the past and in our time.
No musical background is required but you will need access to a playback device and Youtube. You can expect plenty of concert clips, live performances (mine), a concert in Innsbruck and an afternoon trip to Salzburg: Mozart’s birthplace and the setting for The Sound of Music.

The University of New Orleans International Summer School program has a mandatory class attendance policy. All students are required to attend class for all morning classes and any required afternoon and/or weekend fields trips and lectures. No unexcused absences are allowed. However, LFU students who have to miss a UNO class due to LFU examinations in the first two weeks of our program, can receive one excused absence for this. Any further unexcused absences will result in an academic penalty. Each faculty member determines the penalty for missed classes. Most professors deduct a letter grade for each additional missed class day. For details, please refer to your course syllabi, which will be distributed on the first day of class.
