408083 PS Life World, Life Forms: Individual and Society 1
summer semester 2016 | Last update: 01.02.2017 | Place course on memo listThe introductory seminar on the sociological analysis of constructions of masculinity. It builds upon and deepens the topics discussed in the „Vorlesung“ with the same name (see the program for more information). Objective of the course: Engaging with selected works of sociological masculinity studies, students should deepen their understanding of selected areas of life world and life forms.
In this introductory seminar we we engage with the sociological analysis of masculinity and constructions of masculinity. The tension between individual and society in constructing masculinities lies at the core of our interest. In analysing these constructs, basic theoretical texts are discussed as well as current debates in critical masculinity. The approach taken in this seminar illustrates that masculinities are constructed in dialogue with complex social influences. Besides gender relations, also other axes of social difference, such as racism or economic conditions play a role in the construction of masculinities. Building on such a theoretical approach, we explore how sociological masculinity studies can contribute to the critical understanding of current social problems and debates.
