Introduction into the attempts to attribute sense to history as a whole which are to be found in occidental philosophy. Discussion of their impact upon politics and history of ideas.

Is it possible to conceive history as a whole showing a meaningful structure? Are there common patterns to be found in such theories of history? Discussion of such attampts brought foreward by St. Augustin, Da Fiore, Vico, Voltaire, Kant, Comte, Hegel, Marx and others.
