609257 English Linguistics and Culture: Computer-mediated Communication in English
summer semester 2016 | Last update: 28.06.2017 | Place course on memo listThe course aims at making students better aware of the types and formats of computer-mediated communication that use English as a language of wider communication. This implies looking at new text-types and genres that are emerging within the new media, and especially at the different forms that this type of communication (supposedly incorporating features from both the spoken and the written language) shows.
A general overview on studies on CMC will pre provided, including the main theories drawing from discourse Analysis and Conversation Analysis; students will then proceed to carry out their own specific studies.

Students are required to attend regularly; presence at the first session, in particular, is mandatory, as well as attendance to the workshop. Other requirements for positive assessment are: language proficiency adequate to the 2nd Abschnitt level, active participation in discussions, regular reporting on research progress, a 20-min presentation (30 for MA students) with handout, and a written research paper (stylesheet for linguistics available on Institute’s website).
