Students will learn to…

  • appreciate New Zealand literature in its particular cultural, political, social, geographical and historical framework;
  • use theories and methodologies for an in-depth analysis and interpretation of literary and other cultural texts;
  • consolidate their knowledge to discuss and analyse literary texts with the help of the relevant terminology and critical categories;
  • write a research paper.

It is not only because New Zealand has once more demonstrated its dominance in world rugby in 2015 that it often seems a ‘better version’ of Britain, thousands of miles away in the South Pacific. And yet, the small island nation strongly attempts to validate its independent and, in fact, ‘post-colonial’ status, also by proudly promoting a demonstrable New Zealand literature that reaches far back into pre-colonial times. In the course of this proseminar we will look at the various forms of literary expressions over time, particularly in the context of the country’s turbulent history and varied socio-cultural developments.
