The aim of the lecture is to provide students with an understanding of the development of the literary genre of poetry in America from its beginnings to the present.

The lecture will introduce the greatest American poets from the beginnings to the present and closely analyse some of their best and most representative poems. It will also provide background information on the poets’ lives, their historical and cultural contexts. A complete handout with poems and other informational details will be provided at the beginning of the semester.

Prerequisite for the Master's Programme: none

For the Teacher Training Programme (Lehramtsstudium: 344): VO2: American Literature and Culture (mit Leseliste).

Due to substantial differences in the allocation of ECTS-Credits in various curricula (teacher training program - BA/MA English and American Studies), the requirements for this course vary. Information will be provided by the instructor at the beginning of the course.
