The aim of the seminar is to help the students understand and appreciate (American) poetry with its many facets in a time when poetry seems to be redundant.

"Poetry is thoughts that breathe and words that burn," said 18th-century English poet Thomas Gray, and "Poetry. Beauty. Romance. Love. These are what we stay alive for," is pronounced by Mr. Keating, the unconventional English teacher in Dead Poets Society. The seminar intends to take a closer look at poems by American writers in regard to certain topics with the aim to probe into the possibilities that poetry is offers us in the 21st century.
