Learning Outcomes: Students are expected to have acquired:

i. Awareness & understanding of the role played by CLIL in the European setting and of sources available.

ii. General knowledge of CLIL developments in Austria & Europe in the context of European language policy

iii. Knowledge of practical methodologies and understanding of the context of the 4 C's Curriculum & the CLIL Matrix

iv. The competence to apply methodologies in a realistic classroom setting

v. The competence to reflect upon application and the oral and written presentation thereof

There are clear indications that learning content and language in an integrated way will become increasingly important in the classrooms of the future. This course aims to give an overview of the possibilities and state-of-the-art of teaching a subject through the medium of English. The course will include a view of CLIL practices, an introduction to established CLIL methodologies including reference to language acquisition theories, which are useful to CLIL. There will be opportunities to apply methodologies to materials from various subject areas, to devise and trial model lesson plans and to reflect upon their effectiveness.

Input by tutor, individual research on theme, group work during university session, teamwork applied during classroom application phase as in preparation for university-session presentation, group presentations by students, written reflective paper submitted by team.

This course is part of IMoF's Middle Module (Mittelmodul). Admission to the course according to IMoF’s admission guidelines (for information please consult the IMoF website: http://www.uibk.ac.at/imof/lehre.html).

The course is conceived primarily for language students with a second subject, which could be taught in English.
