Intercultural communicative competences (ICC) is seen as one of the main foundations for foreign language teaching. However, in differentiation of the cognitive, affective and pragmatic level, its implementation and assessment in ELT often poses challenges for researchers and teachers. In this context we will look at different concepts of cultural learning and how these can be applied to ELT. We will use various resources to explore how ICC can successfully be developed.

Experiential and cognitive activities to foster intercultural learning (e.g. simulations, critical incidents, communication style inventories, games, cultural orientation style profiles)

Videos to illustrate concepts

Short lectures and discussions

Paired sharing, group and small group activities

Active participation in class, reading assignments, interactive presentationand / or simulation, reflective paper
