summer semester 2016 | Last update: 27.06.2016 | Place course on memo listBasic knowledge of subject-specific academic work
Pre-modern composite political systems per se were apparently a place of collective fears. This was especially true for the Austrian countries and later on for the Habsburg Monarchy, also to be accounted for by their location characterized by migration and partly montane regions as well as a fairly low level of urbanisation. In our introductory seminar course we will also discuss individual phobias, like, for instance, of sovereigns (and their possible traumatic childhood experiences due to wars). In this context, we will occasionally also deal with everyday and discursive interaction and in particular with patterns of coping attempts, all of this reciprocally between the majority and/or dominant society and minorities as well as fringe groups. In this sense, we will try to interpret this topic also as a communication problem in a multi-disciplinary approach and from a long-term perspective.
Preparatory phase, joint interpretation of source texts, literature research, presentation
Continuous participation, practical exercises, brief presentation incl. handout and written paper
