Understanding of important concepts in fungal physiology

Contents:

The basic concepts treated in the lecture "physiology" are applied to filamentous fungi. The special features of this group of eukaryotic microorganisms are exemplified. The treated topics include the hyphal way of life (tip gowth), the mycelial way of life (network buikding), complex growth curves in batch culture, uptake of nutrients (energized by plasma membrane proton pumps; proton symports), and special aspects of metabolism (compared to prokaryotes and other eukaryotic organisms). Using the example of biotechnological production of citric acid by Aspergillus niger a synopsis of the treated topics is presented.
