This course provides a basic understanding of the relation between architecture and the city. Students will learn a basic vocabulary of urban design by developing a specific design project. Obtain basic knowledge and initial experience with the design process, in connection with getting to know and exercise development and presentation of an idea.

Brief Gruppe 0:
Inverse Manhattism
seeks an inverse of its speculation: here building makes a new ground as urban textile. The Hudson Bay is our floating plane that does not rely on the grid of the city.  Opposed to the city, which is subdivided into gridded parcels, this project groups buildings for itself against the ground of the city. This artificial ground condition turns into a new urban context: a figurative field.

We will think of the Hudson bay as a blank canvas for housing. Each project will in turn explore contemporary forms of housing and their modes of urban settlements. This urban settlement will be our figurative field.  Through analysis and configuration, these project will be abstracted into architectural elements. Finally, these elements will group to produce an artificial landscape made of housing in itself.

The design process will consist of the several exercises:
1) Analysis of existing housing projects.
2) Abstraction of an existing building into a specific architectural design element.
3) Field studies of the relation of one architectural element to its figurative field.
4) Adoption to the floating site of the Hudson Bay: a project of “Inverse Manhattism”.

This course introduces formal, typological, topological, morphological and mereological methods in the scale of a settlement. The urban condition as the relation between one architectural figure and its figurative field will be explored as an overlap of the seven organisational tensions between inside-outside drawn by O.M. Ungers.

Evaluiert wird der kreative Umgang mit Feldorganisationen. Die Beurteilung erfolgt über den endgültigen Entwurf.
