433008 Basics of Management: Introduction to Organisation and Human Resource Management
winter semester 2016/2017 | Last update: 07.05.2018 | Place course on memo listIn this course students will develop a theoretical and practical understanding of various human resource management tools (e.g. assessment center, incentive schemes, outplacement, 360° feedback). They will be able to assess human resource management tools from functionalist and instrumental perspectives and to reflect them critically. Economic success is not the only focus of these perspectives but social aspects will also be discussed.
Additionally, this course trains students in their academic writing. The course offers practice on how to produce a systematic and scientific seminar paper on a topic related to human resource instruments. This course should offer basic knowledge and practice to develop academic writing abilities. In this context, a systematic literature review and professional handling of academic sources will be important aims of the course.
Furthermore, students will develop their communication and interpersonal skills through group work, presentations and discussions in class.
The focus of this course is on the one hand the introduction into academic work, especially academic writing and on the other hand human resource management tools. We discuss these tools from functionalist and reflexive perspectives. An efficient and effective as well as socially responsible application of HRM tools are the main issues of discussions in the course. Students should also gather data and experience from organizational practice e.g. by interviewing human resource managers.
Students prepare a seminar paper in group, using basic techniques of academic writing. Students will be taught how to review systematically the existing literature, structure their paper and, apply academic writing principles. They receive systematic feedback to their seminar papers. Moreover, students have the opportunity to present their work in class and get feedback for their presentations.
Course examination according to § 7, statute section on "study-law regulations"
20% presentation, 80% seminar paper
