Sex education should be an instrument which helps cultivate sexual literacy in children and youth . It should offer concrete and comprehensible information about sexuality as well as sexual and reproductive health (Braeken 2011), in order to foster a positive relationship in children and youth towards their own sexuality, as well as the ability and freedom to make relevant decisions about it.

In this proposed workshop we will discuss Annedore Prengel’s conceptual pedagogy of diversity (Prengel 2006), in which she outlines the benefits and constraints of the three pedagogical movements as well as how they work together. We will then examine how her pedagogical concepts could be applied to sex education in an emancipative way.

The goal of the seminar is to see sex education as a part of a pedagogy referring to social power relations such as racism and (dis-)ability. Together we will consider which elements are needed to achieve a sex education of diversity and how these elements could be implemented in an educational context.

The seminar will take place as a sequence of lectures over a period of two Fridays and Saturdays. The following texts must be read as preparation for the first workshop. All texts will be available online or as PDFs.

Course with formative assessment, i.e., students are graded on the basis of written and/or oral tasks assigned regularly over the term.
