To enhance and extend students’ language awareness and to improve their text-writing skills. The aim is not to train students to produce professional translations but to deepen their awareness of some basic differences (and, of course, similarities) between English and German.

Translation of authentic German texts from German into English; interlingual textwork; analysis and comparison of parallel texts (e.g. newspaper articles in both languages dealing with the same problem/topic/issue). Special emphasisi will be placed on tense and aspect, modals and conditionals, reported speech, word order, false friends, collocations.

Translations of texts are produced in class and at home (regular assignments); in-depth discussions of texts in class.

Weekly assignments, written final exam.

A select bibliography will be handed out at the beginning of term.
