Developing an understanding of the interrelationships between subject formation in literature and wider cultural phenomena; becoming familiar with the genres of coming-of-age fiction, young adult literature, and bildungsroman

Generation Z, Generation Sensible, the Facebook Generation, or simply iGen: there are almost as many terms to refer to today’s teenagers as there are different outlooks among the teenage population itself. “Adolescents are important because […] they are at the forefront of social change”, writes Kenneth Millard in Coming of Age in Contemporary American Fiction. Looking closely at the ways in which young people come of age – and particularly the odds, stakes, and problems of subject formation – seems to lay bare what kind of ‘age’ it is that we live in. If this premise holds true, then how do teenagers in contemporary British fiction and culture grapple with the pressing issues of recession and austerity, technological and climate change, and a resurgent nationalism? And what does this tell us about the general state of the nation? After a historical contextualisation and genre definition of coming-of-age narratives, this seminar will analyse an array of representations of teenagers and the teenage years in the UK, from Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre (1847) via Alan Warner’s Morvern Callar (1995) to the popular TV series Skins (2007-2013).
