609361 Critical Area Studies: British and Anglophone Cultures: Returning the Gaze - Stories of Resistance
winter semester 2016/2017 | Last update: 27.06.2017 | Place course on memo listThe aim of this course is to familiarise students with key concepts of postcolonial theory for the analysis of stories that offer a counter-perspective regarding racism and gender issues.
Students will apply these theories to the different counter-stories in their analysis and answer questions like: which strategies do the authors/writers devise when challenging the predominant discourses? It will include an analysis of works of fiction, in particular children's literature (Charlie And The Chocolate Factory, The Secret Garden, Tintin In The Congo, Noddy, Pippi Longstocking, ...), drama and poetry, as well as film and music.
