The students are supposed to understand the reasons for the relatively late development of the literary genre of American drama against the historical and cultural background. The analysis of individual plays will show which thematic focuses and dramatic techniques were developed in the course of the 20^th century.

The lecture offers an introduction to the early development of theater in the US as well as a survey of the development of American drama in the 20^th century. Representative plays, in the chronological order of their production, will be discussed in detail and placed in their historical and cultural context. The required reading list for the lecture will be handed out in the first session.
