American Literature and Culture (mit Leseliste): American Cinema in the Literary Context

The objective is to gain knowledge about the most important developments in American film history and its manifold intermedial relations to literature.

This lecture surveys the history of US cinema from its beginnings in the late nineteenth century to the present. It covers the most important technological, industrial, stylistic, and aesthetic developments. Special attention will be paid to how literature as an artform and institution has affected and been affected by film history.

A list of filmic and literary works will be distributed in the first session of the course.

Prerequisite for the Master's Programme: none

For the Teacher Training Programme (Lehramtsstudium: 344): VO2: American Literature and Culture (mit Leseliste).

Due to substantial differences in the allocation of ECTS-Credits in various curricula (teacher training program - BA/MA English and American Studies), the requirements for this course vary. Information will be provided by the instructor at the beginning of the course.
