Knowledge and skills in empirical linguistic research

The seminar focuses on the analysis of the interaction between conductor and musicians in french and italian symphonic orchestra.

The students learn how an empirical and qualitative linguistic study in the field of conversational and interactional research with a focus on the institution 'orchestra' is conceived and realized. They know the method of the ethnomethodological Conversation Analysis and practice the production of recording stocks of video sequences. The students also transcribe video material with a transcription editor.

Finally, in a data session, the students will have the possibility to experience the practice of analytic work in conversational and interactional research.

Plenary lecture, group work, individual work, practical work with transcription software

Active involvement in the lessons, production of recording stocks and at least one complete transcription sequence

The seminar includes French and Italian as languages and is hold in German.

The seminar is connected to a one-day EXCURSION to Bolzano. The students will visit a rehearsal of the Haydn orchestra and hear a presentation by Daniela Veronesi of the University of Bolzano on the subject of "Correction sequences and semiotic resources in ensemble music workshops".
