Knowledge of the caracteristics of baroque literature and culture in Spain and Spanish America in a systematica nd historical perspective; knowledge of the work of selected authors and texts from different genres (lyrical, dramatic, prose texts); knowledge of important research paradigms.

The baroque does not only characterise Spanish literature and culture of the golden age but has also influenced the cultural production in the Spanish territories in America. The couse will give an overview over baroque literature in Spain and its transfer to Spanish America. We will have a look at texts from different genres (poetry, drama, prose) and analyse the characteristc aspects of baroque aesthetics in a systematic and historical perspective as well as the processes of transculturalisation between the Spanish baroque and the barroco de Indias. We will study authors such as Lope de Vega, Calderón de la Barca, Luis de Góngora, Juana Inés de la Cruz and Carlos Sigüenza y Góngora. Furthermore, we will have a look at relevant research paradigms related to the epoch in question.

Presentation by the course teacher; exercises based on the course readings; discussions.

Contributions in class based on the readings; final exam.

The couse readings will be pubished at the end of june.
