612031 Selected Topics in Synchronics Linguistics: Language Contact
winter semester 2016/2017 | Last update: 30.09.2016 | Place course on memo listStudents are able to reflect critically the criteria for identifying key words in different kinds of media and to adjust the application of criteria with respect to the given medium. They are acquainted with various digital text corpora and are able to formulate corpus queries and apply them to the corpora.
For quite some time, the term key word has been playing a significant role in the area of linguistics oriented towards the study of cultural questions. They are described as focal points of a cultural area, to which certain attitudes, values and expectations are tied (cf. Goddard & Wierzbicka 1995: 57). Text corpora are a good basis for identifying the characteristics of key words; yet at the same time, the term key word has another meaning in corpus linguistics and data processing (especially in data retrieval, as applied e.g. in Google queries) than it has in linguistics. This seminar will address the question, which general criteria for identifying key words exist, how the term key word can be defined within different research contexts, and how certain (cultural) key words can be identified, described and represented with the help of corpus data. The project Dekoder, which is devoted to Slavonic-German cultural exchange, will serve as one example of application.
