Participants will become familiar with Russian/Soviet thinking and philosophy in the late 19th and in the 20th century. Furthermore they will broaden their knowledge on Russian culture from the end of the 19th century to the present day. 

This course will present the most important movements in Russian thinking and philosophy, which emerged in late 19th and in the 20th century (N. Tolstoj, N. Berdjaev, P. Florenskij, Russian Formalism, M. Bakhtin, L. Vygotskij, G. Lukács, Ju. Lotman, M. Mamardashvili, V. Podoroga). Most important will be aspects of literary theory and analysis. Furthermore the influence of Russian thinking on literary schools and movements outside Russia, especially in Europe and the USA, will be discussed.

Lectures, presentations by the participants, discussion of texts

Regular and active attendance; presentations by participants; essay at the end of the term

Lists for further reading will be provided for each topic.

Due to substantial differences in the allocation of ECTS-Credits in various curricula (teacher training programs/specialized degree programs), the requirements for this course vary. Information will be provided by the instructor at the beginning of the course.
