Students are able to identify the joint characteristics and differences between the Slavonic languages and to relate them to other (neighbouring) languages.

In linguistics there exist two approaches to the classification of languages. Firstly, languages, especially those with a long history of written texts, can be assigned to genetic language families, whereas the assignment to sprachbund is based on the clustering of (morpho)syntactic features. The assignment of some South Slavonic languages to the Balkansprachbund is the instance best known among Slavicists. However, during the last years the existence of some more sprachbunds, such as the Charles-Magne-Sprachbund or Standard Average European, has been postulated. In the seminar we will explore the question how the Slavonic languages can be classified with the help of these different approaches.
