"Turn and face the strange", sings David Bowie in one of his most popular songs, "Changes". Hardly any artist has focused so centrally on the question of identity, playing with roles and the matter of "authenticity"  – and thereby shaped the "System Pop" substantially. We will analyse the "metamorphoses" of David Bowie in their historical settings, through the perspective of performance studies, gender studies and musicological analysis (structure and sound). Since it is an undergraduate course, we will also talk about databases and research tools of popular music studies and we will read basic texts.

Final papers of students can comprise usual seminar papers or song-monographic texts on the model of the "Songlexikon" (http://www.songlexikon.de).

Evaluation on the basis of regular written and oral contributions.

Course examination according to § 7, part of the statute on the study law of Innsbruck University. Oral and written contributions.

Will be announced in the course.
